ROBIN ROBERTSON

Owner, Manager, and Cycling Coach

 PHILOSOPHY

When you feel confident, you feel good and life seems better.  I believe that everyone has a starting point for feeling better – both internally with how your body works and feels and externally with how you look and carry yourself.  Every day brings an opportunity to do something good for yourself through exercise and making healthy choices.  And when you feel good, you share that with others, helping to make our world a friendlier place.  That’s what I love about how we can be a healthy part of your life here at the Club.
Besides helping members to feel fit, play hard, and enjoy life, I want to share my love of cycling and fitness with everyone!  I ran competitively through high school and at WWU.  However, I had to stop all impact sports at the age of 24 because of my bad pair of knees from a congenital condition and subsequent surgeries.  This meant no more running or skiing and so I turned to cycling, swearing it has held off a knee replacement and kept me strong – even with arthritis and a total of 10 knee surgeries (to date!).

CLIENT BASE

I love to work with people in cycle training at all ages and abilities to help you gain confidence in all you do:  from those who want to reduce knee or hip pain and start to LIVE again to those looking to boost their cycling performance, and everyone in between.  I will also help you with a proper fit on our stationary cycles.  The best thing about indoor cycling is that anyone can do it and no one gets left behind!

PHILOSOPHY

Robin’s and my goal is to make Bellingham Training and Tennis Club the best possible fitness facility/operation.  This requires constant effort, commitment and risk.  My job is to bring these assets to the Club every day.  Even if most people never see what I do.

CLIENT BASE

My efforts involve three different client bases. First are all the members.  Second is our wonderful staff. Third are the wide variety of vendors, community members, gov’t officials and neighbors.  I must work diligently with each group to assure the long term success of BTTC.

EXPERIENCE AND CREDENTIALS

· Husband and father: it is amazing how much I have learned from my family
· Attorney: Private practice (commercial and real property) 1986-2015
· Adjunct Prof. Whatcom Community College: 2015--current

PERSONAL INTERESTS

Tennis:  I love playing tennis and have my entire life.  Every time I step on the court, my goal is to just fun (learning to have fun even if playing poorly).
Music:  I love music.  After a 26 year hiatus, I returned to playing the French horn. I now play horn in the Skagit Symphony, the Whatcom Wind Ensemble and the Boundary Bay Brass Quintet.  Music brings joy to my life.
Biking:  I share with Robin a love for bicycling: road, mountain or touring.  Biking is freedom.
Teaching:  I changed careers to become an educator. I love it.  Educating our youth is the best possible investment in our country’s future. And is really hard—finding the key to motivate a wide variety of individuals is an amazing challenge.
Home Port Learning Center:  I have been deeply involved in this is a private non-profit school for adjudicated and “at risk” youth for over 24 years.  An amazing program that provides kids with an opportunity to succeed in an alternative learning environment.

PHILOSOPHY

Life can get overwhelming with a busy schedule; work, family, school, you name it. Writing “to-do’s” down and prioritizing them may help develop a more balanced mental/physical/emotional lifestyle. This helps me stay focused on the most important tasks first and listen to not only what my body wants, but what it needs. My biggest priority that helps me maintain this balance is exercise. Whether it be in a gym, on the track, or running errands around town, finding at least one hour a day to be active does wonders for my overall motivation and confidence to carry through the rest of the day. I believe everything should be done with a passion. Whatever you choose to do, stand behind it, dedicate yourself to it, and put your happiness first. Daily reminders of your blessings rather than your setbacks can put you in the right mindset to improve and accomplish the goals you set for yourself. Do what you love, love what you do, and no obstacle can overcome you

CLIENT BASE

I spend the most of my summers at a gym back home working out/training alongside middle to high school athletes who have similar aspirations as I did at their ages to play collegiate sports. While I am away at school, I am continuously surrounded by collegiate athletes with different body types, and strengths, as well as limitations. As a Kinesiology major, the way the body moves and performs excites me and inspires me to surround myself with indivuals who choose to push their amazing bodies to new limits every day. I hope to gain experience working with a variety of ages, backgrounds, and abilities as I grow as a student at WWU.

DEB BROWN

Tennis Teaching Professional

PHILOSOPHY

Tennis is a lifetime sport for the whole individual including:

Mind: focus - on the here and now
Body: fitness – strength and flexibility
Spirit: fun – passion and creativity

My approach is not “one size fits all”, but customized individual formulas based on learning style, potential, and objectives to achieve maximum results.  I use a cooperative approach to develop problem solving capabilities.  Every time a player prepares to hit the tennis ball, a decision is required.  Getting in to proper position to hit the ball requires anticipation, fitness, and speed.  The challenge of competition involves innovation, stamina, and passion.  As Billie Jean King says, “pressure is a privilege”.  My greatest joy is helping players develop qualities that will serve them for a lifetime, both on and off the court.

CLIENT BASE

I enjoy teaching all ages; from three year old Tracy Austin to senior players in their eighties and nineties.  I love teaching all abilities; from top ranked tournament players to players with special needs.  My teaching style works will with students of a wide range of interests; from serious competitors to those who play for fun or cardio fitness.

TJ TIPTON

Tennis Teaching Professional

PHILOSOPHY

My love of tennis comes from the complexity of the game, requiring so many abilities like quickness, strength, stamina, strategy, and mental toughness. A tennis game can constantly evolve and be honed throughout one’s life. Tennis can be as competitive as each player likes and be an individual or a team sport. It can be played for the amazing workout or the great social aspects it provides.
I believe tennis is the best sport ever created, played by young and old alike.

CLIENT BASE

Since no player’s game is exactly the same, I enjoy working with all levels and ages as each provides the challenge of helping each person meet their goals. Whether it’s the beginner learning the basics, or a tournament level player looking for a competitive edge, I enjoy it all. I especially enjoy seeing it “click” with each player; that’s the moment when the shot or strategy turns from a deliberately thoughtful mental process to a natural and effortless one.

· Coaching tennis for over 25 years including 13 here at BTTC

Most importantly, I will always consider myself a student of the game and want to continually improve to become the best instructor and player I can be.

CLIENT BASE

I enjoy working with players who are passionate not only about tennis but strive to become their best self. Tennis is a sport where players can always be improving and honing their skills. And I get the most pleasure out of working with players who want to play at the very best of their ability and love the feeling of improving their game. Overall, no matter what the age, skill level or tennis background, I take pride in helping players achieve their tennis goals.

LETS GO PLAY!!!

SEAN JEFFREY

Tennis Teaching Professional

PHILOSOPHY

Tennis is a sport that one can play for a lifetime. It is also a sport that one continually has room to grow and improve in throughout their lifetime. My goal is not to only help my students enjoy and love the game of tennis but also to help them to continually improve and grow in their tennis skills. My philosophy is to have my students hit, hit, and hit some more.  I believe that to improve one’s tennis skills it takes continuous repetition and ongoing training.

CLIENT BASE

I enjoy working will all levels of players, whether it’s working on basic strokes for a beginner or a specific aspect of the tennis game for a more advanced player. An important aspect of my teaching is to analyze and diagnose technique in order to develop a player’s skills. TYLER BUDWEY

Tyler Budwey headshot.jpg

Fitness Director & Personal Trainer

PHILOSOPHY
Moderation in everything, even moderation.  This life is meant for living, and that means doing the things that bring you joy and happiness.  We all have responsibilities that take over our interests from time to time, and we all have habits and tendencies that get in the way of us being out best selves.  Quite frankly, there is nothing wrong with that.  That’s the way it is supposed to be.  Life is a constant journey of learning to balance order and chaos, with each victory and mistake along the way serving as a lesson to help you be a little more right the next time around.  This is the way I choose to live my life, and the approach that I bring to fitness.  Taking care of ourselves to promote a long and healthy life, but not beating ourselves up when we fall off our horse.  We’re not here to be the best at exercise, but we can use exercise to help us be the best version of ourselves.

CLIENT BASE
More than anything, I enjoy showing people that they are stronger and more capable than they think they are. With that approach, I can mesh with any population as long as they are willing to put forth the effort and show the desire to be better than they were the day before. A major strength I offer to you when it comes to training is combining prehab and injury mitigation tactics with sports performance. It really is the best of both worlds and allows me to work with someone recovering from an injury all the way up to a high-level athlete. Regardless of who may be in front of me, I am always striving to educate and help someone learn about themselves and to enjoy the process along the way. The most rewarding aspect of my job is helping someone who truly needs it get to somewhere they never thought was possible.

EXPERIENCE AND CREDENTIALS
·BS Exercise Science - Bridgewater State University
·NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist
·Functional Range Conditioning Mobility Specialist
·CPR, First Aid, and AED Certified

PERSONAL INTERESTS
I love all things outdoors – hiking, backpacking, camping, kayaking, mountain biking and frisbee.  I also enjoy training mixed martial arts. I have wrestled my entire life and now regularly train jiu jitsu.  I enjoy hanging out with friends and going on road trips and adventure.  Any opportunity I have to go see live music, I’m there.

ELIZABETH SHEINKOPF

Zone & Ride Instructor

PHILOSOPHY

I have been interested in athletics and improving myself physically my entire adult life. As a child, I had very little opportunity to experience a variety of sports and forms of physical expression, and therefore felt inadequate and unconfident in this realm. As a result, I feel very strongly about giving children a variety of opportunities in sports, fitness, dance, etc. so that they might find the activity that they love, setting the stage for a healthy adult life.

CLIENT BASE

As I have aged, injuries have forced me to change the way I train and the sports and activities I do. At times I have felt this to be a painful process, one of giving up; of getting old. Ultimately, I see it as an opportunity to explore new things and learn to push myself in new ways. I can empathize with anyone who has had an injury, or has had to give up a favorite sport or activity. I firmly believe that this doesn’t mean that you have to give up being a great athlete and in optimum physical condition, but you may need some help getting there.
I enjoy working with anyone who wants to work hard, no matter their age or fitness level. Training could entail a complete lifestyle change or a small tweak in an existing program. No matter how large or small the change, I think of training as a collaborative process. Together we can make the changes to your program and your lifestyle that will enable you to be your best self.
