ROBIN ROBERTSON

Robin Robertson 2018.jpg

Owner, Manager, and Cycling Coach

 PHILOSOPHY

When you feel confident, you feel good and life seems better.  I believe that everyone has a starting point for feeling better – both internally with how your body works and feels and externally with how you look and carry yourself.  Every day brings an opportunity to do something good for yourself through exercise and making healthy choices.  And when you feel good, you share that with others, helping to make our world a friendlier place.  That’s what I love about how we can be a healthy part of your life here at the Club.
Besides helping members to feel fit, play hard, and enjoy life, I want to share my love of cycling and fitness with everyone!  I ran competitively through high school and at WWU.  However, I had to stop all impact sports at the age of 24 because of my bad pair of knees from a congenital condition and subsequent surgeries.  This meant no more running or skiing and so I turned to cycling, swearing it has held off a knee replacement and kept me strong – even with arthritis and a total of 10 knee surgeries (to date!).

CLIENT BASE

I love to work with people in cycle training at all ages and abilities to help you gain confidence in all you do:  from those who want to reduce knee or hip pain and start to LIVE again to those looking to boost their cycling performance, and everyone in between.  I will also help you with a proper fit on our stationary cycles.  The best thing about indoor cycling is that anyone can do it and no one gets left behind!

DOUG ROBERTSON

Owner, Tennis Player, Behind the Scenes Guy

PHILOSOPHY

Robin’s and my goal is to make Bellingham Training and Tennis Club the best possible fitness facility/operation.  This requires constant effort, commitment and risk.  My job is to bring these assets to the Club every day.  Even if most people never see what I do.

CLIENT BASE

My efforts involve three different client bases. First are all the members.  Second is our wonderful staff. Third are the wide variety of vendors, community members, gov’t officials and neighbors.  I must work diligently with each group to assure the long term success of BTTC.

EXPERIENCE AND CREDENTIALS

· Husband and father: it is amazing how much I have learned from my family
· Attorney: Private practice (commercial and real property) 1986-2015
· Adjunct Prof. Whatcom Community College: 2015--current
· Life long tennis player.

PERSONAL INTERESTS

Tennis:  I love playing tennis and have my entire life.  Every time I step on the court, my goal is to just fun (learning to have fun even if playing poorly).
Music:  I love music.  After a 26 year hiatus, I returned to playing the French horn. I now play horn in the Skagit Symphony, the Whatcom Wind Ensemble and the Boundary Bay Brass Quintet.  Music brings joy to my life.
Biking:  I share with Robin a love for bicycling: road, mountain or touring.  Biking is freedom.
Teaching:  I changed careers to become an educator. I love it.  Educating our youth is the best possible investment in our country’s future. And is really hard—finding the key to motivate a wide variety of individuals is an amazing challenge.
Home Port Learning Center:  I have been deeply involved in this is a private non-profit school for adjudicated and “at risk” youth for over 24 years.  An amazing program that provides kids with an opportunity to succeed in an alternative learning environment.

I am passionate about teaching, facilitating and supporting people to transform their lives with the power of real food, real movement and real love.
My dad is my biggest inspiration – diagnosed with High Blood pressure, congestive heart failure and type 1 diabetes early in his 70’s, he used this as a catalyst to educate himself on his conditions and develop a practice of daily self-care that includes a nutritious diet that he has crafted based on his tastes and a fitness routine that includes strength training and swimming.
His vigilance reminds me that it’s never too late to claim and commit to a healthier, more vibrant lifestyle.

CLIENT BASE

I love working with self-motivated individuals who are interested in making a deeper connection with their body through movement, food and relaxation. PHILOSOPHY

I believe it’s important to live day by day. Appreciate your body for what it does for you, don’t take it for granted. Appreciate your family and friends for what they contribute to your life. Cuddle your animals and play with your children. We have one life to live and it’s easy to get caught up in what it means to be successful or what is expected of us. I think it’s important to remember to take pause and remind ourselves and others to acknowledge the beauty of being healthy and alive.

KENDYL COMISKEY

GET Fit Instructor, Membership & Guest Services

PHILOSOPHY

My favorite quote is “go out into the world and do well, but more importantly, go out into the world and do good” – this is my personal philosophy because it challenges me to do more good for those around me rather than be concerned with my own success and failures in the world. Whether it is celebrating what your body can do on the fitness floor, signing up for your first tennis clinic, or simply needing an ear to listen – I consider it my job to help make your experience here at BTTC feel encouraging and positive!

CLIENT BASE

Instructing fitness classes has taught me that I love working with people who are recovering from an injury (or have some other physical limitation) and eager and excited to excel.  Helping people to overcome or work around their limitations and live a more comfortable, functional life challenges me to do research outside of fitness classes so that I can return with relevant exercises so that results are encouraging and motivation stays high.  Also, working with members who get apparent and intrinsic enjoyment out of just being in class makes me so happy because their willingness to excel makes me want to do the same!

EXPERIENCE AND CREDENTIALS

· Western Washington University – Kinesiology
· Internship at BTTC
· Certified Healthy Knees Coach
· Adult & Pediatric CPR, First Aid, and AED Certified
· Volunteer experience with Bellingham Sports & Spine Physical Therapy

PERSONAL INTERESTS

Hi friends! I am from the Palm Springs of Washington and moved to Bellingham in 2013 to attend WWU where I immediately declared a major in kinesiology with an emphasis in movement studies (because the human body is SO COOL). I am a huge Seattle sports fan and love keeping up with whatever team is currently in season. In my spare time I enjoy working out, getting outside near the water on sunny days, and spending time with my friends + family.

PHILOSOPHY

Smile always. Be happy. Believe in yourself. Believe in others.
We never know what someone is going through or what they’re struggling with. But we know we can make a huge difference simply by being kind. So I always try to make an extra effort by greeting people with a smile because you never know if someone is having a bad day.

CLIENT BASE

I’ve worked in the hospitality industry for many years, and I’m looking forward to making new friendships with both staff members here at BTTC. I’ve always considered myself a people-person and Iook forward to learning, playing, and working with everyone!

EXPERIENCE AND CREDENTIALS

· Adult & Pediatric CPR Certified
· First Aid, and AED Certified
· Anacortes’ High School Varsity Tennis 2008-2011
· Skagit Valley Adult League 2014-2017

PERSONAL INTERESTS

Being raised in Anacortes gave me the love and appreciation for the ocean, tight-knit communities, and the arts. In my downtime I enjoy traveling, going to plays & concerts, and playing tennis. I’ve been fortunate enough to travel to Italy, Spain, and France and look forward to traveling more once I’ve finished my degree. My favorite concerts include Justin Timberlake, John Legend, Josh Groban, One Republic, Lady Gaga and Game of Thrones orchestra. Some of my favorite live-theatre productions include Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, and Wicked. I’m looking forward to working at the club while attending Western for my undergrad in Political Science.

AMANDA SHORT

PHILOSOPHY

Life can get overwhelming with a busy schedule; work, family, school, you name it. Writing “to-do’s” down and prioritizing them may help develop a more balanced mental/physical/emotional lifestyle. This helps me stay focused on the most important tasks first and listen to not only what my body wants, but what it needs. My biggest priority that helps me maintain this balance is exercise. Whether it be in a gym, on the track, or running errands around town, finding at least one hour a day to be active does wonders for my overall motivation and confidence to carry through the rest of the day. I believe everything should be done with a passion. Whatever you choose to do, stand behind it, dedicate yourself to it, and put your happiness first. Daily reminders of your blessings rather than your setbacks can put you in the right mindset to improve and accomplish the goals you set for yourself. Do what you love, love what you do, and no obstacle can overcome you

CLIENT BASE

I spend the most of my summers at a gym back home working out/training alongside middle to high school athletes who have similar aspirations as I did at their ages to play collegiate sports. While I am away at school, I am continuously surrounded by collegiate athletes with different body types, and strengths, as well as limitations. As a Kinesiology major, the way the body moves and performs excites me and inspires me to surround myself with indivuals who choose to push their amazing bodies to new limits every day. I hope to gain experience working with a variety of ages, backgrounds, and abilities as I grow as a student at WWU.

EXPERIENCE AND CREDENTIALS

· Studied Exercise Science at Western Oregon University (2014-2017)
· Transferred to Western Washington University (2017-present) to pursue a Bachelor’s of    Science degree in Kinesiology and Women’s Javelin

DEB BROWN

Tennis Teaching Professional

PHILOSOPHY

Tennis is a lifetime sport for the whole individual including:

Mind: focus - on the here and now
Body: fitness – strength and flexibility
Spirit: fun – passion and creativity

My approach is not “one size fits all”, but customized individual formulas based on learning style, potential, and objectives to achieve maximum results.  I use a cooperative approach to develop problem solving capabilities.  Every time a player prepares to hit the tennis ball, a decision is required.  Getting in to proper position to hit the ball requires anticipation, fitness, and speed.  The challenge of competition involves innovation, stamina, and passion.  As Billie Jean King says, “pressure is a privilege”.  My greatest joy is helping players develop qualities that will serve them for a lifetime, both on and off the court.

CLIENT BASE

I enjoy teaching all ages; from three year old Tracy Austin to senior players in their eighties and nineties.  I love teaching all abilities; from top ranked tournament players to players with special needs.  My teaching style works will with students of a wide range of interests; from serious competitors to those who play for fun or cardio fitness.

TJ TIPTON

Tennis Teaching Professional

PHILOSOPHY

My love of tennis comes from the complexity of the game, requiring so many abilities like quickness, strength, stamina, strategy, and mental toughness. A tennis game can constantly evolve and be honed throughout one’s life. Tennis can be as competitive as each player likes and be an individual or a team sport. It can be played for the amazing workout or the great social aspects it provides.
I believe tennis is the best sport ever created, played by young and old alike.

CLIENT BASE

Since no player’s game is exactly the same, I enjoy working with all levels and ages as each provides the challenge of helping each person meet their goals. Whether it’s the beginner learning the basics, or a tournament level player looking for a competitive edge, I enjoy it all. I especially enjoy seeing it “click” with each player; that’s the moment when the shot or strategy turns from a deliberately thoughtful mental process to a natural and effortless one.

EXPERIENCE AND CREDENTIALS

· NAIA Academic All American for Nebraska Wesleyan University
· Coaching tennis for over 25 years including 13 here at BTTC

GRIFFIN WOOD

Tennis Teaching Professional

PHILOSOPHY

I strongly believe that sound fundamentals and mechanics are the keys to improving your game and maximizing your enjoyment on the court. Whether it is a small grip change or learning an entirely new stroke I strive to have players leaving the court with a feeling of accomplishment after each session. Most importantly, I will always consider myself a student of the game and want to continually improve to become the best instructor and player I can be.

CLIENT BASE

I enjoy working with players who are passionate not only about tennis but strive to become their best self. Tennis is a sport where players can always be improving and honing their skills. And I get the most pleasure out of working with players who want to play at the very best of their ability and love the feeling of improving their game. Overall, no matter what the age, skill level or tennis background, I take pride in helping players achieve their tennis goals.

LETS GO PLAY!!!

SEAN JEFFREY

Tennis Teaching Professional

PHILOSOPHY

Tennis is a sport that one can play for a lifetime. It is also a sport that one continually has room to grow and improve in throughout their lifetime. My goal is not to only help my students enjoy and love the game of tennis but also to help them to continually improve and grow in their tennis skills. My philosophy is to have my students hit, hit, and hit some more.  I believe that to improve one’s tennis skills it takes continuous repetition and ongoing training.

CLIENT BASE

I enjoy working will all levels of players, whether it’s working on basic strokes for a beginner or a specific aspect of the tennis game for a more advanced player. An important aspect of my teaching is to analyze and diagnose technique in order to develop a player’s skills. Coaching remains an enjoyable challenge for me because each client is different which pushes me to employ different teaching techniques to develop solutions to help improve their tennis game.

NICK JARVIS

Tennis Teaching Professional

PHILOSOPHY

My favorite quote of all time is that, “hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.” Tennis is a game that combines all of your physical ability, mental strength, and experience, so any of the above can give a player the edge they need to compete. This means that when a player enters the court, they should give it their all. Hard work is one thing I can’t give you, so come prepared!

CLIENT BASE

I love working with clients that are motivated, excited, and eager to improve any kind of skill. Whether it be stroke technique, or conditioning, my goal is to use the foundations each player starts with to build a strong game. But most of all, I enjoy working with people that want to have fun on the court. It’s surprising how far a positive attitude can get you both in tennis and in life, and my goal is to help players use that as motivation to improve.

EXPERIENCE AND CREDENTIALS

PHILOSOPHY

Fitness is a journey. It’s not about what you did 20, 30, or 40 years ago. It’s about where you are now and where you’re headed. I love being a part of this journey in people’s lives: meeting people where they’re at and walking with them as they grow into the best version of themselves – physically, mentally, and spiritually. Everyone deserves the chance to have a higher level of fitness, regardless of restrictions, regardless of age, regardless of ability. They deserve the chance to be able to enjoy their lives more fully. That’s what this is about – enhancing lives.

ELIZABETH SHEINKOPF

GET Fit Instructor

PHILOSOPHY

I have been interested in athletics and improving myself physically my entire adult life. As a child, I had very little opportunity to experience a variety of sports and forms of physical expression, and therefore felt inadequate and unconfident in this realm. As a result, I feel very strongly about giving children a variety of opportunities in sports, fitness, dance, etc. so that they might find the activity that they love, setting the stage for a healthy adult life.

CLIENT BASE

As I have aged, injuries have forced me to change the way I train and the sports and activities I do. At times I have felt this to be a painful process, one of giving up; of getting old. Ultimately, I see it as an opportunity to explore new things and learn to push myself in new ways. I can empathize with anyone who has had an injury, or has had to give up a favorite sport or activity. I firmly believe that this doesn’t mean that you have to give up being a great athlete and in optimum physical condition, but you may need some help getting there.
I enjoy working with anyone who wants to work hard, no matter their age or fitness level. Training could entail a complete lifestyle change or a small tweak in an existing program. No matter how large or small the change, I think of training as a collaborative process. Together we can make the changes to your program and your lifestyle that will enable you to be your best self.

I believe that training should not be for just one event.  You are training to have a healthier life.  Challenging yourself not only changes you physically, it changes you mentally.
I also believe that exercising can be fun.  I try to bring fun into every workout that I do and every class I teach.

CLIENT BASE

I like to work with clients with a range of skill levels, from novice to pro.  I don't just want to be up front yelling instructions to my class.  I want to engage everyone in the experience.  I feel that everyone gets a better workout and has more fun when we all get our energy and effort working together.
